We traded in our trusty 2015 Honda Crv for a new to us 2018 Honda oddysey Touring. The Crv was the main family hauler but with 2 kids and the grandparents visiting more often it was getting very difficult to get around. My wife is a loyal Honda owner so i let her make all the decisions on this one, i think she made a great choice. I know this thing is an appliance but i have found myself enjoying the comforts, so much easier to get the kiddos out of the car now. I own a motorcycle so that should offset it and my oppo card Should still be valid :)

Kinja'd!!!

How many oppo dads drive and love their mini vans?

We don’t own one, but we’ve had a couple of trips where we rented a minivan. Despite how much everyone enjoyed the vans and how they successfully performed on those trips, my wife refused to buy one. She was determined not to be a soccer mom. Then she showed up at soccer practice in her SUV along with all the other moms showing up at soccer practice in their SUVs.

Within the next decade, kids who grew up with SUVs will refuse to buy  SUVs because they don’t want to look like soccer moms.

That was my wife she literally quoted that if she ever owns a mini van shoot her dead lol, We had our Crv serviced and the dealer picked me up in a 2020 oddesey, she went to sleep at 2 in the morning looking up videos and reviews on the van and here we are.  I have a suv i dont find them too practical for a family even the third row ones.

Nothing more Oppo than a minivan. Older minivans better, but the Odyssey is one of the better styles in new minivans IMO. :)

It has a built in vacuum cleaner?

No vehicle purchase should ever affect your Oppo card status. This is an entirely reasonable purchase of a vehicle that fills your needs. That’s Jalop AF

The only way an SUV is a better family car than a Mini van, is if you actually off-road it, or if it’s a full size truck and you’re going to be towning more than a minivan can handle.

My father in law did both. So he raised his kids in a diesel Excursion, but he regularly towed trailers with 4 or 5 four wheelers, an ice shack, and a 12 seater  party deck fishing boat, idk how long it is, but it’s not a small boat.

Once all the kids moved out it got replaced by a TDI Jetta. And the excursion is sitting with 190,000 miles.

It was also an awesome road trip car, but so are Mini vans.

“The only way an SUV is a better family car than a Mini van, is if you actually off-road it....”

There was high water in our area and our daughter was at school. My wife said she wished our daughter had taken the Explorer to school since it’s higher off the ground. She didn’t believe me when I told her the Outback was a better vehicle for bad conditions because it is all-wheel drive and has more ground clearance than our Explorer. I finally had to show her the specs online. Now she’s glad that our daughter drives an Outback, but she still hates that it’s a wagon.

The only reason I'm not driving a minivan is towing capacity. My Safari is rated to Class III. Midivan, I guess.

You can keep your Oppo card, however, your Jalopnik Gold membership has been revoked.

I kid. Congrats on the new ride! The Odyssey is a great van and if I remember correctly, can hold a 4x8 sheet of plywood. So, it’s basically a pickup truck too!

It makes me wonder what factor is limiting towing capacity - engine, cooling, brakes, suspension, or something else. When I was traveling to Houston, I regularly saw small trucks and SUVs flat-towing two other vehicles, often loaded down with stuff. I can guarantee those guys were exceeding the towing capacity of the lead vehicle, but flat -towing meant that the suspension wasn’t carrying much load.

I suspect that to provide the interior space and comfortable ride, the rear suspension has less travel and is sprung too softly to allow much weight for towing. The question is whether or not an improved rear suspension will increase the towing capacity.

“SUVs because they don’t want to look like soccer moms.”

Even though the types of SUVs/CUVs they go for make them look EXACTLY like soccer moms.

Front wheel drive and a transaxle made of balsa wood and glass has always been my assumption. The Safari has the same drive train as a half-ton pickup and rear wheel drive. I owned a Dodge Caravan and it was only rated to tow Class II.

I think a lot of the automotive trends are driven by childhood experiences. One generation refused to buy wagons and there was a rise of the minivan. The next refused to buy minivans and we saw the rise of the SUV. My kids hate driving SUVs. My daughter is really happy with her wagon and my son wants a small truck .

Yep. The Explorer switched to front wheel drive on the fifth generation in 2011. The feedback from the enthusiasts wasn’t good, so they are switching back to RWD for the sixth generation this year.

I’m driving a rode-hard, low-mileage Crown Vic interceptor these days and I must say, the more I drive it, the more I like it, though it’s underpowered by about 75 horsepower. I can’t imagine swapping it for something like an Explorer.

I have a friend who is a CHP officer with some seniority and I am always surprised by how uninterested he is in the cars he drives for work. He’s received special pit maneuver training as well. They’re all just cars that he gets in and drives.

The Explorer has a standard V6 that makes 290 hp, the Interceptor version ups that to 304 hp. The Ecoboost version in both makes 365 hp.

The Interceptor needs the hp to deal with the extra weight from all the extra safety equipment, but I’d bet that the consumer model is just as fast as the Interceptor, which is to say not all that fast. My wife’s Explorer could get up and go, but it wouldn’t plant you in the seat. The 0-60 time was around 8 seconds.

In other words, your older Crown Vic has about the same acceleration as the  Explorer.
